Meet Bob Moore
Bob Moore founded Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods in 1978 with a mission to move people back to basics with healthy whole grains and minimally processed foods. The motivation to do so took root in the mid-1960s when he was inspired in part by his wife, Charlee, who had set out to establish a healthier lifestyle for their family.
The business grew successful and the Moore family moved to Oregon, planning semi-retirement. But a chance encounter that led to the creation of the Bob’s Red Mill we all love today. Bob and Charlee came across an old mill that was for sale and, before too long, began stone grinding flours and cereals for the local Portland market.
In 1988, dramatic business success was followed by the unthinkable: an arsonist burned Bob’s Red Mill to the ground. Start all over? Rebuild from scratch? Bob and his loyal employees rolled up their sleeves and began to rebuild.
Today the company operates a 480,000 square foot manufacturing facility and a 170,000 square foot World Distribution Center. In addition, the Bob’s Red Mill Whole Grain Store & Visitors Center welcomes visitors from all over the world—all of whom enjoy the vast product selection, cooking classes, a bakery, and a restaurant.
In 2010 Bob had a big birthday. He turned 81 with a birthday surprise for his employees: he gave the company to them in an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). The announcement stunned employees and many business suitors but that’s Bob. He said at the time he simply had no choice but to give the company to those who had helped build it.
Bob’s Red Mill produces more than 400 products and sells them in 80 countries worldwide. The International Sales and Export department continues to expand to meet the demand for healthy, whole grain products around the world. Our Food Service department works to ensure that customers can find our products not only in supermarkets, but in restaurants, schools, hospitals, and the armed services. Bob continues to search out new and healthy, minimally processed products so our loyal customers can continue to eat “whole grain foods for every meal of the day!”
