Expansions Don’t Die of Old Age. What Kills Them?

This will soon be the longest post-World War II expansion in U.S. history. And while the economy is performing well, expansions often die at their peak. Hence it is not unreasonable to consider whether the end is nigh for this one.

In this presentation, economist Michael McCracken will discuss causes for the end of expansions, including shocks to oil prices and the popping of asset bubbles. McCracken, an assistant vice president at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, will give special attention to the possibility that the Fed itself, through its policies, could kill the current expansion.
