The Economic & Investment Implications of the Largest Election Year In World History
Daniel Clifton
Partner & Head of Policy Research
Strategas Securities
More people across the world will vote in 2024 than any other year in world history. Roughly 40 percent of world GDP is voting for a head of state this year and residents in countries representing 70 percent of world market capitalization cast their vote when including parliamentary elections. These elections are taking place at a time of geopolitical conflict, rising populism, and slow growth outside the United States.
In the US, the policy differences between Democratic and Republican presidential candidates are as wide as can be for US elections making the issues of trade, foreign policy, taxes, budget, regulation, and immigration impactful for a wider number of company earnings than elections have produced in the past. Additionally, the differences on trade and foreign policy are making the US election a global election. Small changes in the US election probabilities are moving entire country stock markets such as Mexico, India, and China.
Daniel will discuss the likely outcomes of the 2024 election and the investment and economic implications to the various outcomes. Specific focus will be on actionable investment ideas and how macro events such as the 2025 debt ceiling and fiscal cliff will be resolved.
