Where Have the Investment Banking Generalists Gone?
For most of the last 50 years, middle-market companies have relied on small regional investment banks to help engineer their necessary M&A and capital-raising transactions. Every major city had a few “go-to” firms, and in many cases those firms’ employees would break out on their own to form “single shingle” deal shops. In recent years, the middle-market investment banking landscape has changed significantly with investment banking clients, more often than not seeking bankers with a specific industry focus rather than a traditional generalist. The trend toward clients preferring “industry bankers” goes against the traditional grain of many middle-market firms, which historically employed stables of M&A generalist bankers.
We have assembled a panel of investment bankers who will share their transition from once being a generalist banker to spending, as Malcolm Gladwell states, the requisite “10,000 hours” in order to become an industry expert.
